Rival Cultists in Shoot out in Awka, Police Mobilizes to Scene

Sources around Zik Avenue in Awka have reported heavy shooting among cultists in the area.

A source told FIDES that the shooting was by rival cult groups, who clashed in the early hours of Saturday.

According to the source, residents of the area scampered to safety during the shooting exercise, leaving the cult members as they shot at each other.

The state Police command confirmed the shooting, stating that police patrol has been intensified within the area and the entire Awka.

The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said, “Following the sound of gun shots by Zik Avenue, Awka, police patrol has been intensified in Awka.

“Preliminary information reveals that the cause of the shooting is as a result of cult related incident/clash.

“The situation is closely monitored and further development shall be communicated.”

Meanwhile, Ikenga enjoined the good people of Anambra to remain security conscious and continue to provide the Police with useful information that will assist to effectively track down criminal elements in our society.”

He said the APP can help them call for help promptly, once there is a case of criminality in their area.

He said: “They (residents) are encouraged to report suspicious person(s)or movement(s)to the nearest Police Station or through the Command Emergency numbers 112 or call 07039194332 for prompt response.
