History was made on New Year’s Day in Anambra State as a 19-year-old first-time mother from Mgbakwu gave birth to the state’s first baby of the year 2026 at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka.
The bouncing baby boy, Mmaduabuchi Egwu, was delivered at exactly 9:40 a.m. through normal vaginal delivery and weighed a healthy 3.5 kilograms, drawing smiles from hospital staff and well-wishers.
The proud mother, Mrs. Peace Egwu, hails from Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area.
Speaking shortly after delivery, the young mother expressed deep gratitude to God for a successful birth, describing the arrival of her son as a New Year blessing.
Mrs. Egwu said she faced some challenges during pregnancy but credited the hospital’s medical team for their professionalism and care from the antenatal stage through delivery.
She also praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his administration’s support for maternal and child healthcare in the state, pledging to give her newborn the best care possible.
The nurse on duty, Mrs. Chinwoke Asiegbu, who conducted the delivery, confirmed that the mother cooperated fully throughout the process.
She advised Mrs. Egwu to ensure her baby receives complete immunisation and to practice exclusive breastfeeding to promote proper growth and development.
The birth of Mmaduabuchi Egwu has set a joyful tone for 2026 at COOUTH, Amaku, marking a hopeful beginning to the New Year for Anambra State.
