Nawgu community enrolls Indigenes into ASHIA for affordable healthcare

The Nawgu Development Union in collaboration with the General Hospital Nawgu has enrolled more Indigenes of the community into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) and also carried out free medical outreach.

The enrollment and outreach was held at the hospital’s premises in Nawgu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of the General Hospital, Nawgu, Dr Chidinma Olour said that the primary purpose of the outreach, which included health talks, consultation, medical test, drugs, others was to encourage the people of the community to seek proper medical treatment from the hospital.

The ASHIA team at the event sensitised the people on the need of accessing secondary healthcare whenever the need arises.

Mrs Tonia Okoli, an ASHIA staff, educated the people on the benefits of health insurance, pointing out that it helps to save the cost of hospital bills and at the same time ensure quality healthcare services delivery to ASHIA enrolees.

The Nawgu Development Union represented by the Chairman of the community health committee, Dr Lazurus Ugochukwu Okafor, applauded the philanthropists and wealthy members of the committee for enrolling over 170 Nawgu indigenes into the ASHIA scheme and hoped they would meet their target of 1,000 people.

He said that the health committee was one of the committees set up by the community that ensured the wellbeing of the Nawgu people in terms of access to proper medical care and sanitation.

Mrs Christiana Okoye, a newly registered ASHIA enrolee expressed gratitude to the committee, noting that going to the hospital had been a very challenging task for her because of the exorbitant cost but expressed optimism that with ASHIA, she will start receiving quality healthcare services at an affordable cost.
