The Anambra state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Queen Dr Elizabeth Agwu, says the commission is happy with the number of residents so far registered on the ongoing Voter Registration Exercise in the state
Speaking with reporters at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Awka, the REC, disclosed that a total of 4,423 voters have so far registered in the exercise which started from Jan 5 but to end April 17.
According to her, the commission recorded zero registration in the first week, while 936, 1832 and 1455 registrants were captured in the second, third and fourth weeks respectively.
“There’s no registration apathy in the state, considering the fact that we just registered last July. So far, the figure is encouraging. The people are coming out.
“But we want to avoid rush or situation whereby people will be calling for extension after the expiration of the registration,” she said.
However, she called on Anambra state government to help in mobilizing the residents the more,by that the number would go higher
The REC urged eligible voters to take advantage of the exercise to obtain their voters card, just as she warned against double registration, describing it as exercise in in futility as system would reject such registration during system cleansing.
She also urged those with change of residency and damaged voter’s card to seize the opportunity to make the necessary corrections and amendments ahead of 2027 elections.
She added: “We have two registration points across the Local government areas in the state. One is stationed at each local government, while the second one is rotationary.
“If we don’t register, we’re doing ourselves deservice. Those who refused to register will negatively affect those that registered in one way or the other.
“Remember, the card is not only for voting, it’s major authentic card for personal identification. It’s your civic responsibility to obtain your card to enable you to vote. Meanwhile, it doesn’t take time to register.”
Appreciating state government for supporting the commission in the area of encouraging eligible voters to do the needful, the REC called for more support in the ongoing exercise.
“Anambra state government should assist the commission to encourage the people. Let them join forces with us in this campaign. They did it last time. We urge them to do it again.
“Moreso, Anambra is privileged to be among the few states that register twice in a year due its “stand alone” status,” she said.
