A routine trip home turned tragic on Friday evening when a bus returning from a condolence visit collided with a tipper truck at Nawfia, along the Awka–Onitsha old road, leaving six people dead—four women and two men—and five others injured.
The fatal crash, which occurred around 6:20 p.m., involved a red 608 bus conveying 32 passengers from Ebonyi State and a yellow-and-black tipper truck.
A visibly shaken survivor told our correspondent that the bus driver had been “overtaking recklessly” in a desperate attempt to make up for lost time.
“He kept overtaking dangerously. It was one of those overtakes that caused the collision with the tipper,” the witness recounted.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Bridget Asekhauno, said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited in the morgue, while the injured were rushed to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku.
Asekhauno commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors. She added that FRSC officials from the Awka unit responded swiftly, evacuated the victims, and cleared the obstruction to restore the free flow of traffic.
According to the Corps, all 32 occupants of the bus were adults—9 men and 23 women. While six died, 21 escaped unhurt.
Describing the incident as “a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving,” Asekhauno urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous overtaking, and prioritise safety at all times.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement, sustained public education, and prompt emergency response to road traffic incidents.
