CVR:Slug: CVR: ‘Obiano’s Public Holiday Didn’t Impact Exercise’

The two days public holidays declared by the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano for citizens of the state to go out and participate in the continuous voters registration(CVR) has been described as one that had no impact.

Two governorship aspirants; Mr Godwin Ezeemo and Mr Oseloka Obaze who spoke to THISDAY on the conduct of the CVR in their areas described the holiday as wasted, blaming government of not properly planning the event to achieve the needed impact before making the declaration.
Recall that Anambra State governor, Chief Obiano had declared Monday and Tuesday last week as public holidays, to allow citizens of the state opportunity to participate in the registration process.
Ezeemo told our reporter in an interview while monitoring the process in his Aguata area that the turn out seemed more than what INEC could handle.
Ezeemo who is running for governor on the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA said the holiday was not well planned as the readiness of INEC and the activeness of their machines were not monitored.
Speaking to THISDAY at Aguata secretariat, Ezeemo observed happily that there was massive turnout to fulfill their civic right, but said that the state government did not liaise with the INEC to see how the holiday can achieve result by knowing the number and workability of the machines to handle the expected large number because of the holiday.
On his part, Obaze who is running for governor on the platform of PDP said there was nothing wrong with declaring a two-day public holiday for the exercise, but everything was wrong with declaring it without consulting with INEC.
“To do a thing like this, you must sit with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC and map out what can be done in the two days to make the event worthy of the two day holiday.
“You must consider INEC and their readiness to mobilize their workers to the centres on those days, how well the machines function and other things. For me, the two days holiday was just wasted,” Obaze said.
Meanwhile, THISDAY reports that because of the problems experienced by electorates in the registration process, in Aguata Area, Ezeemo, an illustrious son of the area has liaised with INEC to create a schedule that will entail rotational registration in all the communities of the area.
He told THISDAY that each of the 12 communities in the area will take two days each depending on the schedule marked out for them to participate in the registration, instead of the officers staying put at the local government council. ‘Obiano’s Public Holiday Didn’t Impact Exercise’
