Soludo’s wife commended for quick intervention on brutalized septuagenarian

The Obeagu-Orofia Abagana women have commended Anambra Governor’s Wife, Nonye Soludo, for the quick intervention given to a 75 years old Mrs Theresa Nwokaka, allegedly beaten by her daughter, Mrs Ukamaka Udugbo.

Mrs Eunice Anagor, President of women wing of Obeagu-Orofia Abagana village gave the commendation in an interview with the Newsmen on Thursdays in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra.

Anagor said that the video clip of where Udugbo was allegedly seen beating her mother went viral on July 15, which caused lots of uproar in the community and across the country.

This, however, led to her arrest by police attached to the community.
She said that the women of Obeagu-Orofia were dishearten over the uncommon act of Udugbo and demand to know the reasons behind such heinous act.

Anagor said that the government had stepped into the matter, adding that, the community was watching with close look the outcome of government involvement.

She said that the women were elated over the quick intervention of the wife of Anambra Governor, and described the government as one with human face.

“Everyone that watch the video clip where Udugbo was flogging, pouring water and kicking her mother was moved by empathy and wondered reasons behind the heinous act.

“ Our joy is full at the intervention of the ministry of women affairs, under Mrs Ify Obianbo, as Commissioner for Women Affair, Social Welfare and Child Development.

“She stepped in and the narrative changed, she knows her work well. Nwokaka had been taken to hospital for medical care, all expenses taken care by the government, ” she said.

The woman said that Nwokaka was discharged from the hospital in July 18 and was safely home now enjoying the ambience of her new home courtesy of the governor’s wife.

Anagor said that the wife of the governor also provided a mobility aid wheel chair for the aged woman with a promise to oversee her welfare by the ministry visit to confirm her stability.

“We have enjoyed this favour from the government, and has resolved that our only way to return gratefulness is to key into government policies and programmes that falls within our capability.

“We have seen government and felt it as a working government whose eyes roves around the state even to rural areas and ensure that we enlighten our young wives and girl child on basic family values to checkmate the ugly incident from a repeat in distance future,” she said.

Anagor also appreciated the Divisional Police Officer in Abagana, SP Ifeanyi Umeh, and the woman ASP, Tina Agu, in charge of police juvenile welfare centre for their professional prowess.

She also commended Mr Jude Akpua, state lawmaker representing Njikoka 2 constituency, where their community fell and the chairman, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the community for coming to the woman’s aid.

Anagor called on other wealthy people in the community to come to their aid financially so as to sustain the government help by ensuring good care for the woman and even to start up a little trade for her son Emeka to guarantee her care.

Mrs Nkem Okafor, neighbour of the victim Nwaokaka said that the quick intervention of the government and other people has yielded great difference.

Okafor said that the woman can respond to compliments now than before when she cannot talk.
“Mama was very industrious in her young age,lots of people fed from her pot,” she said.

She said that the woman was her sponsor during her wedding over ten years now.

“I wish to use this medium to call on all of us who enjoyed one favour or the other to remember Mama now,” she requested.

In a sperate interview with Chief Clem Aguiyi, Transtion Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area described the incident as a taboo.
Aguiyi said that the council intends to act beyound the present circumstances noting that many elderly and venerable people may be going through such treatment and not reported in the media.

He said that the council will take a deep thought and come up with sustainable actions to abridge such occurrence in the community.
” We will plan for a short and long term programme to be accessed by people as it’s affects them,” he said
