Eke Amawbia, Anambra State, was plunged into chaos on Thursday as a devastating building collapse claimed the lives of four individuals, including a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and a father of four.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately noon, when the two-storey building suddenly crumbled, trapping pedestrians and market stalls beneath its rubble.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic” and “horrific,” with screams and cries for help filling the air.
The NSCDC officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was at the market purchasing foodstuff for his family when the disaster struck. His eldest son, just 9 years old, and his widow, a nursing mother, are now left to grapple with the loss.
“I was standing nearby when I saw him walking towards the market,” said an eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous.
She added,”We exchanged pleasantries, and he mentioned he was buying food for his family. It wasn’t even five minutes later that the building collapsed, crushing him. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Rescue efforts were swift, with emergency responders rushing to the scene to pull survivors from the rubble. Four persons were rescued, but sadly, three lives were lost.
The incident has raised concerns about structural integrity and safety in the area, with many calling for increased scrutiny of building practices. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the collapse.
As the community mourns the loss of four precious lives, condolences pour in from across the state.
