The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, may soon regain his freedom as indications emerge that President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is considering his release under amnesty on October 1, a source who pleaded anonymity has said.
Kanu’s continued detention has sparked widespread concerns, prompting numerous stakeholders to appeal to President Tinubu for a political solution to the situation.
Notable Igbo leaders, including the late Mbazulike Amaechi and Chukwuemeka Ezeife, had previously met with former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure Kanu’s release.
Although Buhari gave assurances, he failed to fulfill his commitments before leaving office on May 29, 2023.
One of the key arguments for Kanu’s release is that the court has discharged him of all treasonable offenses, allowing him to continue his trial without detention.
Kanu’s legal team has maintained that their client has fulfilled the conditions for his release, and any further detention is unlawful.
The IPOB leader’s continued incarceration has heightened tensions in the Southeast, with many fearing a resurgence of violence and unrest.
President Tinubu’s potential amnesty for Kanu is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a bid to ease tensions in the region.
The move is also expected to placate Igbo leaders and stakeholders who have been demanding Kanu’s release.
Kanu’s freedom would mark a significant development in the quest for peace and stability in the Southeast.
The IPOB leader’s release would also pave the way for dialogue and reconciliation, potentially ending the pro-Biafra agitation.
As October 1 approaches, hopes are high that Kanu will finally regain his freedom, bringing an end to a chapter of uncertainty and unrest.
The development would be a significant milestone in President Tinubu’s administration, demonstrating his commitment to addressing the country’s pressing issues and injustices.
