A Nigerian, Dr. Peter Nwosu has been elected President of the State University of New York at Oswego.
Nwosu, who is from Umudioka in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra State, is a Professor of Communication Studies.
He graduated in Mass Communication at the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu in 1982 and later travelled to the United States of America, USA, where he obtained MA in Liberal Arts from Towson University and a PhD in Communication Studies from Howard University. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Institute for Higher Education.
A passionate advocate for access to high-quality education for diverse student body and a systems thinker and strategic planner with a strong belief in the power of collaboration and shared governance, Nwosu has led strategic initiatives to advance equity-minded student success outcomes. He has fostered institutional effectiveness, and enhanced these institutions’ national reputations and visibility as engines of upward mobility and community engagement.
As president of SUNY, Nwosu will serve as Chief Administrative Officer at Oswego campus and he is expected to provide leadership and direct most complex, demanding and frequently sensitive responsibilities in the areas of teaching, learning and scholarship research.
In addition to implementing the policies of the institution’s Board of Trustees and chancellor, the SUNY president will direct current and long range planning related to institutional goals, academic programmes and enrollment projections.
In this capacity, Nwosu will maintain daily working relationship with campus council or trustees and system administration
