Nnewi South stakeholders have united to demand fair representation in the political equation in Anambra South Senatorial District.
Their concern follows the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (from Nnewi North) on July 27, 2024, who previously represented the area.
The stakeholders, including notable figures like Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, Chief Maja Umeh, and Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, signed a statement emphasizing that every Local Government Area in the Senatorial District deserves representation at the federal level.
They highlighted the current imbalance in Anambra South’s political landscape, where six other Local Government Areas have federal representation, but Nnewi South remains without any.
“For instance, Ekwusigo LGA has a sitting Federal House Member, Ihiala has a Federal House of Reps Constituency and produced a Governor, while Aguata holds a Federal House of Reps Constituency and the Governorship position,” the stakeholders observed.
The stakeholders also pointed out that Ihiala LGA, Aguata LGA, and Nnewi South LGA all have 20 wards, but Nnewi South is not a federal constituency, putting it at a strategic disadvantage.
By allowing Nnewi South to produce the next Senator, the stakeholders noted, the zone can address the long-standing inequity and ensure fair representation.
Nnewi South is one of the seven local government areas in Anambra South Senatorial District, with a population of approximately about one million people.
The stakeholders urge embracing the values of equity, fairness, and justice as the bye-election approaches, and call on all political parties, leaders, and the wider community to support their demand.
