The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party( LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi has criticized the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for banning the distribution of palliatives to the poor after recent stampedes across the country.
According to newsreoorts, 67 people, including 35 children, lost their lives in stampedes during funfair and food distribution events in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja.
In response to these tragic incidents, the IGP warned event organizers to involve security agencies or face legal consequences.
However, Obi argued that this restriction would discourage philanthropists from helping vulnerable citizens, describing it as unnecessary bureaucracy.
Obi stated, “The latest directive of the Inspector General of Police is disturbing. Although it’s a timely response to the recent tragedies, it’s open to abuse and may discourage citizens from helping those in need.”
He emphasized that acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy and instead encouraged people to find better, more organized ways to offer help.
Obi also urged the Federal Government to address the root causes of hardship by providing lasting solutions rather than creating barriers for those trying to fill the gaps left by government policies.
He called on the IGP to review the directive and ensure that the police foster collaboration and support in alleviating the suffering of Nigerians.
Many have reacted to Obi’s statement, with some agreeing that the police ban is counterproductive and others arguing that it’s necessary to prevent further tragedies.
