In a move aimed at tackling the security challenges in Anambra State, the Nigeria Police Force has appointed a counter-terrorism expert, CP Ikioye Orutugu, as the new Commissioner of Police for the state.
CP Orutugu, who took over from CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, now redeployed to Force Headquarters as Commissioner of Police in charge of Counter Terrorism Unit, Abuja, is the 35th Commissioner of Police to serve in Anambra State.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command, CP Orutugu brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various states across the federation.
Born on August 3, 1966, in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, CP Orutugu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a cadet Assistant Superintendent at the Nigeria Police Academy Annex Kaduna.
He holds a BSc in Political Science from the University of Port Harcourt, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Lagos, and a PhD in Sociology of Education from the University of Port Harcourt.
Throughout his career, CP Orutugu has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, having served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of homicide, Commanding Officer Federal Highway, and Unit Commander Police Mobile Force, among others.
As a Deputy Commissioner of Police, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police Administration and Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation in Ondo State.
Before his appointment as Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Orutugu was the Commissioner of Police in charge of Counter Terrorism Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The new Commissioner of Police has received specialized training in counter-terrorism, combat leadership, and strategic leadership, and is a fellow of the War College and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Professional Courses.
CP Orutugu has appealed to the general public to support and cooperate with him in combating crime and ensuring a safer Anambra State.
He has pledged to implement proactive policing strategies and community policing to achieve this goal.
