EDITORIAL: Orutugu: Fighting Crime in Anambra Without Guns

EDITORIAL

BY TONY OKAFOR

In a remarkable turn of events, Anambra State has witnessed a significant decline in crime rates, thanks to the innovative approach of Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu.

Since assuming office on February 10, 2025, Orutugu has introduced a unique strategy that focuses on community engagement, social reorientation, and proactive problem-solving, rather than relying on guns and confrontation.

The results are nothing short of impressive.

For the first time in recent history, Anambra State has recorded no gunshots from either the police or criminals in the past month.

This achievement is a clear indication of Orutugu’s courage and vision in challenging conventional policing methods.

Orutugu’s approach is built on the belief that crime can be prevented through education, empowerment, and community involvement.

He has been spotted moving around the state, preaching peace and encouraging residents to reject violence.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed, with many residents expressing gratitude for the renewed sense of security and hope.

What is even more remarkable about Orutugu’s story is that he is a decorated counterterrorism expert, yet he has chosen to fight crime without guns.

His philosophy is simple: “I’m an Ijaw man, we are not born to fear.” This fearless approach has inspired a new generation of police officers and community leaders to work together towards a safer, more prosperous Anambra State.

As Orutugu continues to push the boundaries of innovative policing, we must recognize the significance of his achievements.

His success is not just a reflection of his leadership but also of the resilience and determination of the Anambra people and their Government led by Prof Chukwuma Soludo who recently launched the Udo Ga-achi and Agunechemba security network

We urge those in authorities to take a cue from Orutugu’s approach and invest in community-based policing initiatives.

By doing so, we can create a safer, more harmonious society where everyone can thrive.

Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu is a shining example of the impact one person can have when they dare to challenge the status quo.

His story is a powerful inspiration for a brighter, more peaceful future for Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.
