A tragic road accident occurred along the Nteje-Awka road, near Ukpo Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, April 27, at approximately 9 p.m.
Eight people lost their lives, and six others sustained injuries when a speeding Toyota Hiace bus (EKP375XM) collided with a Mack tanker without a registration number.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus, traveling from Abakaliki to Onitsha, was overtaking dangerously on a single carriageway when it crashed into the tanker heading towards Awka.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra Sector Command confirmed the incident, attributing the cause to speeding.
The FRSC rescue team attended to the injured, transporting them to the hospital, while the dead were taken to Jerusalem Mortuary, Nteje.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, urged drivers to prioritize safety, maintain safe speeds, and ensure clear roads before overtaking.
The FRSC Anambra Sector Command extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Command promised to continue promoting road safety awareness and enforcing traffic regulations to prevent future accidents.
The Sector Commander visited surviving victims in hospitals to assess their condition and offer support.
