EDITORIAL: As Campaigns Start in Anambra, Don’t Tell Us Lies

EDITORIAL

BY TONY OKAFOR

As Anambra’s governorship campaigns commence, we urge the 16 candidates in the race to prioritize honesty, integrity, and respect in their interactions with the electorate.

It is important that they focus on sharing tangible, well-articulated policies and achievements that address pressing issues like infrastructure, healthcare, security, education, and employment.

The days of vague promises and unrealistic claims should be behind us. This is not a time for building castles in the sky.

The electorate deserves fact-based policies, presented with clarity and conviction.

Candidates should engage in respectful debates and discussions, allowing voters to make informed decisions.

We implore them to avoid exploiting security concerns for political gain and instead propose concrete solutions to enhance public safety, such as strategies for community policing, youth empowerment, and social welfare programmes that address the root causes of insecurity.

Candidates should promote peaceful coexistence among supporters and opponents, recognizing that security is a collective responsibility.

By working together towards a safe and prosperous Anambra, they can build trust, foster development, and ensure a brighter future for the state.

This requires a commitment to dialogue, tolerance, and inclusivity.

We expect substance over rhetoric, action over promises.

Candidates should be prepared to defend their policies and track records, rather than resorting to character assassination or inflammatory rhetoric.

The media, civil society, and traditional leaders also have a role to play in promoting issue-based campaigns and holding candidates accountable.

This is an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their commitment to democracy, integrity, and progress.

The future of Anambra depends on the choices we make today, and we urge everyone – candidates and electorate alike – to rise to the challenge.
