Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate for the 2025 Anambra election, Dr. George Moghalu, has pledged to introduce humane tax reforms if elected, assuring citizens that his administration would not burden them with exploitative levies like the infamous “Ndi Aka Odo”

Speaking during the official flag-off of the LP campaign in Onitsha on Friday, Moghalu declared:“People will pay taxes, but not with pestles (Aka Odo). We will not oppress our people. Every promise we’ve made will be fulfilled.”

Moghalu vowed to lead with integrity, compassion, and the fear of God, committing to policies that would prioritize education, infrastructure, and agriculture.

“If we begin to list everything we plan to do, we’ll sleep here,” he said, “but I can assure you that my deputy and I will serve Anambra with dedication. Children will return to school, roads will be built, agriculture will thrive, and we will not disappoint.”

The rally was headlined by LP’s 2023 presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, who unveiled Moghalu as the party’s flagbearer, describing him as a capable and empathetic leader aligned with the values of servant leadership.

“Dr. Moghalu is prepared to govern with empathy and compassion. He will deliver good governance to Anambra. I urge you to support him,” Obi said.

Reaffirming his political commitment, Obi addressed speculations of defection, stating:“I remain a member of the Labour Party, as are all our members at both state and national levels. We are here for this symbolic flag-off of Dr. Moghalu’s campaign.”

Obi praised LP’s deputy governorship candidate, Mrs. Ifeoma Okaro, for her grassroots connection and commitment to family-centered governance.

“She is not only popular but organized. We believe her presence will further enhance our commitment to caring for families,” he noted.

Obi also confirmed his intention to seek the presidency again in 2027.

“Let me remind you that I am contesting for President in 2027, and I am serious about it,” he said. “Everyone has the right to contest, but none of them has better credentials than I do.”

He emphasized that governance must prioritize the poor and small-scale traders — those who often bear the brunt of unfair taxation.

Also present at the campaign launch were Senators Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Tony Nwoye (Anambra North), who threw their weight behind Moghalu’s candidacy and pledged to mobilize support across the state.

With strong endorsements and momentum from Friday’s launch, the Labour Party is hoping to leverage both Obi’s national stature and Moghalu’s grassroots appeal to secure victory in the November 8, 2025 governorship election.
