The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has solicited the intervention of the Nigeria Police Force in addressing the lingering traditional leadership crisis in Awka, particularly involving Chief Austin Ndigwe, who is laying claim to the stool against the recognised monarch, Eze Uzu Gibson Nwosu.
The governor made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, represented by the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the South-East Zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, as part of activities marking the state government’s second term inauguration in Awka.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state government requested police enforcement to ensure order in the traditional tussle, especially as the panel of inquiry set up to investigate the dispute has concluded its assignment.
“Also during the conversation, the state government seeks police enforcement in a harmonious traditional leadership tussle in the state, especially in Awka, as the panel of inquiry concludes its findings,” the statement noted.
During the visit at the Government House, Awka, Governor Soludo commended the leadership of the police hierarchy, describing their appointments as timely in the face of evolving security challenges.
He stressed the need for sustained collaboration between the state government and security agencies to maintain peace and foster economic growth.
The governor further assured the police command of his administration’s continued support in strengthening the state’s security architecture and enhancing public safety.
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General, DIG Onwuemelie expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to deepening its partnership with the Anambra State Government and other stakeholders to safeguard lives and property.
He was accompanied on the visit by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu.
The visit underscored ongoing efforts to reinforce synergy between the police and the state government in sustaining peace, security, and stability across Anambra State and the wider South-East region.
