– Says team will independently transmit polling-unit results to situation room

By Tony Okafor, Awka

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has unveiled plans by his team to independently monitor and transmit election results from every polling unit to its situation room ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Obi disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ARISE 3News, saying the initiative was aimed at ensuring that votes cast at polling units are properly counted, recorded and transmitted without manipulation.

According to him, his team would establish a system that would provide a second channel of transmitting results from polling units, alongside the official channel designated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We must make sure that every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly,” Obi said.

He explained that the proposed system would enable his team to receive results directly from polling units and independently compare them with results subsequently announced at higher levels.

“And we will have even a dual transmission, so that as it’s going to the proper designated INEC portal, it’s also being transmitted where the people can see it,” he said.

Obi said the objective was to prevent a situation where results announced at collation centres or other levels of the electoral process differ from the figures recorded at individual polling units.

“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our situation room the correct results,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor said his team was not alone in seeking greater transparency in the 2027 election, adding that other organisations were also likely to deploy similar monitoring mechanisms.

“And I’m sure there’s so many other agencies that intend to do the same thing. So we’re not going to have a situation where somebody just pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit,” Obi said.

He stressed that the ultimate goal was to ensure that the outcome of the election accurately reflected the votes cast by Nigerians at the polling units.

“I want us to make sure that the right things are done. There’s nothing difficult in having a simple, free, transparent election. It happens in Ghana, it happens everywhere,” he added.
