The Mayor of Anambra West Local Government Area, Dr. Tony Obierike, and the Elite Youths of Anam Foundation (EYAF) have discussed plans to strengthen education in the area, with proposals covering three smart schools, a computer-based testing centre and improved teacher welfare.
The proposals were presented during a meeting between the mayor and an EYAF delegation led by its President, Dr. Christopher Ejike Anekwe, at the council secretariat in Nzam on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The foundation’s blueprint identified educational infrastructure, digital learning, teacher development, student competitions and accommodation as priority areas for collaboration.
Anekwe said the engagement was intended to develop practical solutions to educational challenges and create better learning opportunities for students across Anambra West.
One of the major proposals was the establishment of an Anam Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre to improve students’ access to digital examinations and reduce the cost and inconvenience of travelling to distant centres.
The foundation also proposed initiatives to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, academic competitions and sports.
Obierike welcomed the proposals, commending EYAF for its commitment to human capital development. He expressed his readiness to work with the foundation to improve educational standards across the council area.
The mayor said he envisioned establishing three smart schools in Anambra West before the end of his tenure. He also pledged to prioritise well-equipped libraries, computer laboratories and other essential school facilities.
He encouraged EYAF to develop additional ideas for extracurricular activities and sports, including programmes that could address the transportation challenges of teachers residing outside the local government area.
According to the mayor, the council would consider sponsoring activities such as marathon events where they fall within its budget.
Teacher welfare also featured prominently in the discussions, particularly the provision of suitable accommodation for teachers and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
EYAF Secretary, JohnPaul Udoba, disclosed that the parties discussed teachers’ quarters, corps members’ lodges, security and transportation.
To support further planning, Emmanuel Okeke was assigned to compile an inventory of teachers’ quarters and corps members’ lodges across the local government area by October 22, 2026.
The inventory is expected to establish the condition of existing facilities and identify accommodation needs requiring intervention.
Pastor Frank Agulu, Chairman of the EYAF Anniversary Planning Committee, said the foundation would prepare detailed proposals on priority educational interventions, including possible transportation and accommodation support for teachers and health workers.
He stressed that the next phase would require clearly defined priorities and practical implementation plans.
The proposals are expected to guide further discussions between EYAF and the local government on initiatives to improve educational infrastructure, support teachers and expand opportunities for students.
