Residents of Awka yesterday scampered for safety as gunshots boomed at the popular Eke-awka market during the Monday sit-at-home
The shootings forced traders who opened their shops at the market and adjoining streets to quickly close to avoid being killed
The Razor News, gathered that the gunshots were released by Police team on patrol on Monday
One of the traders who spoke with The Razor News said, ” we went to the market because the governor told us everything has been taken care of, otherwise, I would have stayed home
“As we were in our shops discussing near the Hausa Bureau De change, we saw a truck load of Policemen and when they saw the crowd of people, they released gunshots and people started running
“But I must say that nobody was killed or injured during the shootings ” the source said
When contacted by The Razor News, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident.
He said the Command had already arrested one suspect at eke -awka market, who attacked police convoy on patrol.
Tochukwu said, “the patrol is part of the strategy the Command is using to reclaim the public space and boost confidence amongst ndi anambra and residents alike
He said the situation was still being monitored, adding that the one arrested was helping the Police to get the fleeing others
The new Police Commissioner in Anambra State, Echeng Eworo, had only stayed three days, and had moved in to sanitize the State that had been taken over by hoodlums
