Amaechi Nwachukwu @ 50: The Dr. Meche That I Know

Tribute

By Chibunna Esedo

Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu’s life story exemplifies the timeless proverb, “A good character is the best tombstone.” As I reflect on my encounter with this remarkable individual, I am reminded of the profound impact he has had on my life and the lives of countless others.

It was late May 2022 when I received an unexpected call from my elder brother and townsman, Engr. Chinedu Onwudiegwu (Koko-Butter) while attending a function in Awka. He directed me to visit Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu’s residence at Ngozika Estate. Although we share the same roots as indigenes in Umunya, but our paths had only crossed briefly during the November 6, 2021 Governorship Election. On that occasion, Dr. Nwachukwu served as Umunya Ward 1 PDP collation agent, while I worked as Unit 003 party agent. Our interaction was limited to handing over my result sheet to him.

Koko’s instruction to visit Dr. Nwachukwu sparked curiosity. I left where I had gone to the direction described to me and upon arrival, I was greeted by his security personnel and ushered into the sitting room. In some couple of minutes, Dr. Nwachukwu warmly welcomed me, and after exchanging pleasantries, he revealed his intention of the meeting —— his quest and resolve to contest the Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency seat under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in the upcoming elections. He proposed that I join his team as media assistant.

Initially, I was disillusioned and skeptical about supporting any candidate, given my disappointment with the existing political landscape, especially in our Federal Constituency. However, Dr. Nwachukwu’s sincerity, passion, and vision for transformative change resonated deeply with me. His commitment to being vocal, energetic, vibrant, goal-oriented, and results-driven aligned with my aspirations for our constituency. I never hesitated to offer my support, and I knew I had to be part of his journey.

Our campaign team, comprised of fewer than six dedicated volunteers, worked tirelessly without expecting remuneration. We traversed all 13 communities in Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency; from Umueje to Ogbunike, to Omor, to Awkuzu, to Anaku, to Nkwelle-Ezunaka, to Omasi, to Umunya, to Ifite-Ogwari, to Nteje, to Umolum, Igbakwu and Umumbo, spreading a message of hope. Dr. Nwachukwu’s exceptional manifesto and stellar CV distinguished him from other contestants. His leadership positions and experiences in the medical world were truly impressive.

The electorate responded positively to Dr. Nwachukwu’s genuine approach, perceiving him as a beacon of change. His independence from godfather influence and commitment to accountability further solidified public trust.

Although the election outcome was unfavourable, owing to the highest bidders trading for votes and other practices, but Dr. Nwachukwu’s campaign left an indelible mark in the length and breathe of the Federal Constituency considered as the food basket of Anambra State.

Aside from campaign and electioneering, Dr. Nwachukwu remains a good father, brother and mentor. Notably, he embraced me like a son and brother, offering unwavering support and eager to see me rise to the peak, till date!

Dr. Nwachukwu has consistently demonstrated exceptional character. He has provided scholarships to numerous individuals, offered free surgeries, and rendered medical assistance to those that cannot afford them without expecting payment. All these to those he particularly knew and those he does not and never met. His selflessness and kindness have inspired me to become a better person.

Dr. Nwachukwu’s dedication to the well-being of others is a testament to his remarkable character. As the saying goes, “A tree is known by its fruit.” Dr. Nwachukwu’s fruits are the countless lives he has touched and saved, continously. His actions embody the essence of true leadership, extending beyond politics or personal gain.

Today, as he celebrate 50th birthday, we honour not only his life but also his unwavering commitment to serving humanity. May his story continue to inspire generations to come.

Happy 50th Birthday, Dr. Meche!
