Anambra bans Mining Activities, threatens arrest, criminal prosecution of defaulters

The Anambra State Government has banned all mining activities in the state with immediate effect.

The government cited unauthorized and illegal mining operations that had caused environmental devastation and health hazards in host communities as part of the reasons for the ban.

In a public notice signed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Sylvia Chika Ifemeje, and other top government officials, the state government directed all miners to cease operations until further notice.

The government’s action followed reports of reckless mining activities across the state, which flouted the Mining Act of 2007 and the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law of 2024.

The suspension affects all miners, without exception, and requires them to obtain clearance from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Environment before resuming operations.

Defaulters risk severe sanctions, including arrest and criminal prosecution.

The move is seen as a bold step by the state government to protect the environment and ensure responsible mining practices in Anambra State.
