Anambra Catholic Priest Dies Suddenly While Playing Tennis

Reverend Father Anthony Udogu of the Catholic Diocese of Awka has passed away.

The priest reportedly slumped and died in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2025, while playing lawn tennis in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

According to a statement issued by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, the incident occurred suddenly during the early hours of the day, while the late priest was engaged in a routine tennis session.

The cleric was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital when he slumped, but all efforts to revive him proved abortive.

The statement described his passing as a painful loss to the entire Catholic Diocese of Awka, and extended condolences to his family, parishioners, and all those affected by his death.

The Catholic Diocese also urged the faithful to remember the late priest in their prayers, even as preparations for his funeral are underway.

Born on December 24, 1964, Rev. Fr. Udogu was ordained a Catholic priest on August 19, 1995.

He served the Church for nearly 30 years and was well regarded for his devotion, humility, and commitment to pastoral duties.

Until his death, Rev. Fr. Udogu was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and also served as the Dean of Awka II Deanery.
