In a move that continues to attract national attention, Anambra State is delivering on its promise of affordable and accessible healthcare through the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIA). With a premium of just ₦12,000 per year, the scheme offers one of the most comprehensive health insurance packages in Nigeria, covering a wide range of services including surgeries, specialist care, high-end diagnostic investigations, antenatal care, chronic disease management, and hospital admissions.
Despite the affordability, the scheme has not compromised on quality. Under the leadership of Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, Managing Director of ASHIA, the agency has consistently expanded its benefit package while maintaining efficiency in service delivery. So far, over 233,000 beneficiaries have been enrolled and are actively accessing healthcare across accredited public and private hospitals in the state.
The impact of ASHIA has been far-reaching. Many families have been saved from the financial burden of unexpected medical bills, while communities now enjoy better health outcomes thanks to increased access to preventive and curative services. Stakeholders describe the scheme as a blueprint for Universal Health Coverage, applauding Anambra State’s strategic investment in the health and welfare of its people.
The initiative also complements other health-focused programs such as free antenatal and delivery services for women, reinforcing the Solution Government’s commitment to prioritizing citizens’ well-being through inclusive and sustainable health policies.
ASHIA continues to set the pace, offering a model that other states in the country are beginning to emulate. As the agency calls on more residents to enroll, the message remains clear: quality healthcare is not a luxury — in Anambra, it is a right made accessible to all.
