The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has officially announced Saturday, August 29, 2026, as the date for elections into the offices of local government council chairmen and ward councillors across the 21 local government areas of the state.

The announcement was made yesterday in Awka through a notice signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Genevieve C. Osakwe, Esq. (JP).

According to the statement, the exercise is in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and Section 23 of the Anambra State Electoral Law, 2024, which empower the Commission to issue election notices.

“All registered political parties are required to collect nomination forms from the headquarters of the Commission located at No. 14/16, Km 8, Awka-Onitsha Expressway, Awka,” the notice read in part.

It further disclosed that the election timetable and schedule of activities would be available for collection at the Commission’s office beginning Friday, November 28, 2025.

The forthcoming polls are expected to provide an opportunity for grassroots leadership renewal in the state, marking the second local government elections in recent time.

Observers say the announcement sets the stage for heightened political activities among parties and aspirants vying for leadership positions in the local councils.
