The Federal Government has threatened to take legal action against Anambra State for refusing to distribute empowerment equipment donated to promote entrepreneurship and socio-economic development of women in the state.
Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, who hails from Anambra State, expressed disappointment and frustration that her home state has failed to utilize the equipment, including industrial sewing machines and accessories.
The equipment was distributed to 16 states, including Anambra, to empower women and enhance their economic prospects.
However, Anambra State has failed to identify operational co-operative societies to receive the machines, leaving them idle and unused.
Kennedy-Ohanenye warned that if the machines are not operational by September 13, she would retrieve them and take legal action against the state.
The minister emphasized that leaving the equipment idle is unacceptable, especially when women in Anambra State need them to improve their livelihoods.
She urged the state government to take immediate action to distribute the equipment and empower women in the state.
The refusal of Anambra State to utilize the equipment may hinder the progress of women in the state and undermine the federal government’s efforts to promote entrepreneurship and socio-economic development.
Kennedy-Ohanenye commended Benue State for promptly distributing the machines and urged Anambra State to follow suit.
With markets already available for the products to be produced, the minister sees no reason for the delay in utilizing the equipment.
