Concerns Raised Over Safety of South African-Based Activist in Anambra Prison

News

A worried citizen( name withheld), has sounded the alarm over an alleged plot to harm Boniface Okonkwo, a South African-based human rights activist, currently detained at Nnewi prison in Anambra State.

He therefore urged the Anambra State government, led by Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo, to ensure Okonkwo’s protection while in prison and after his release.

He warned that the government would be held accountable if any harm comes to the activist.

He said Okonkwo was arrested on January 3rd at the Area Command in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, and has been detained in Nnewi prison since then.

He alleged that Okonkwo’s life is in danger, citing concerns over a fellow inmate who was reportedly allowed to use a phone within the prison premises.

He did not provide further details on the alleged plot or any evidence to support the claims.

The Anambra State government and prison authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
