Senator Ekwunife made this known in a Press Statement dated 24th July, 2024, in which she emphasized the prospects, importance and anticipated impacts of such historic, flag-waving development.

Senator Ekwunife specifically conveyed her profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his momentous decision to sign the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law.

According to the Forum DG, this landmark legislative action heralds a new dawn for the Southeast region, embodying a commitment to fostering equitable development and alleviating the socio-economic challenges faced by our region.

Senator Ekwunife further extends her deep appreciation to Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, for championing this noble course and pursuing it to fruition. His tireless advocacy, alongside the collaborative efforts of our distinguished members of the National Assembly from the Southeast region, has been instrumental in achieving this milestone.

Their resilience and commitment to advancing the interests of the Southeast have not gone unnoticed, and we acknowledge their role in this significant achievement.
Senator Ekwunife also acknowledges the Southeast Governors for their steadfastness in lobbying for the passage of this bill. Their collective voice and vision have been pivotal in laying the groundwork for a vibrant and resilient Southeast.

“The signing of the Southeast Development Commission Bill into law is not merely a procedural formality; it represents hope and opportunity for our region,” Senator Ekwunife remarked. “We believe that this commission will serve as a catalyst for transformative development, enabling us to harness the vast potential of our natural and human resources for the collective upliftment of our people.”

The Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) is poised to address critical issues that will enhance the progress of our region. This development will go a long way to address the growing spate of insecurity occasioned by perceived marginalization of the Southeast region in national democracy. It will facilitate investments in vital infrastructure, enhance educational opportunities, improve healthcare delivery, address the mirage of environmental degradation and erosion ravaging the zone, promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance human capital development.

Additionally, the commission will work to create job opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and empower local businesses, thereby fostering an environment conducive to prosperity.

“In unison, we have forged a path towards a brighter future for our region,” Senator Ekwunife affirmed. “This commission is not just an administrative body; it is a symbol of our shared aspiration for progress, unity, and sustained development. Together, we shall work diligently to ensure that the auspicious vision of the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) is realized for the benefit of all our citizens.

“As we look forward with optimism, the Southeast Governors Forum (SEGOF) reaffirms their unwavering commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders—not only to implement the provisions of this law but also to ensure that it delivers tangible benefits to the people of South-eastern Nigeria”‘ she said.
