The recent recognition of Prof. Charles Esimone as Public Servant of the Year at the 4th Edition of the Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards is a well-deserved tribute to his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence in tertiary education.

As the former Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Esimone’s tenure was marked by a plethora of innovative initiatives that not only elevated the university’s standards but also redefined the landscape of tertiary education in Nigeria.

One of Prof. Esimone’s most significant achievements was his ability to foster a culture of research and innovation at UNIZIK.

Through his proactive approach to securing private donations and engaging in endowment projects, he attracted investments worth approximately US$200 million, which enabled the university to establish critical research centres and promote entrepreneurship among students.

This, in turn, led to the discovery of new antimicrobial compounds and the development of a vector-based antiviral

screening technique, demonstrating the university’s potential to drive cutting-edge research and innovation.

Prof. Esimone’s leadership also had a profound impact on the university’s infrastructure and global ranking. During his tenure, the university witnessed significant upgrades, including the establishment of an 18-hole golf course, a zoo, and a tree-planting initiative. These initiatives not only enhanced the university’s physical environment but also contributed to its improved global ranking, with UNIZIK ranking 501+ in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young Universities Ranking.

What sets Prof. Esimone apart from other leaders in the education sector is his people-oriented approach to governance. His administrative reforms introduced digitalization of processes, enhanced facilities in hostels, and promoted a culture of innovation and learning. This approach not only improved the overall student experience but also empowered students to become active participants in the learning process.

Prof. Esimone’s recognition as Public Servant of the Year is a fitting tribute to his tireless efforts to elevate the standards of tertiary education in Nigeria. His transformative leadership and commitment to excellence serve as a great hope for the education sector, demonstrating that with vision, dedication, and a people-oriented approach, it is possible to drive meaningful change and achieve exceptional results.

As we celebrate Prof. Esimone’s achievement, we honour not only his accomplishments but also his demonstrable commitment to the values of excellence, innovation, and public service.

His legacy is a challenge to other leaders in the education sector to emulate his example and strive for excellence in their respective institutions.
