EDITORIAL: Soludo’s Historic Choice of Chiamaka as Anambra SSG Signals a New Nigeria

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has shown that leadership is not merely about governing—it is about shaping history.
With the appointment of Mrs Chiamaka Nnake as Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Anambra has broken a nearly 35-year barrier, appointing its first female SSG.
This is more than an appointment; it is a defining moment.
For over three decades, the SSG position—the engine room of government—remained exclusively male. That reality has now changed. In taking this step, Soludo sends a clear message: leadership must be anchored on merit, competence, and vision—not gender.
At 39, Mrs Nnake represents capacity. From her tenure as a Senior Strategy Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers Nigeria to her impactful role as Anambra State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, she embodies a new generation of technocratic leadership—focused on results, reform, and long-term development, including the Anambra Vision 2070 blueprint.
Beyond her credentials, the symbolism is powerful. Across the emerging world, inclusive leadership is proving not just fair, but smart—strengthening institutions and improving governance outcomes. Anambra is now aligned with that global shift.
Nigeria has seen what competent women can achieve at the highest levels. Figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala have demonstrated that excellence in public service knows no gender.
The elevation of Mrs Nnake fits squarely within that tradition of proven competence, technocratic efficiency, and integrity.
This moment matters deeply for young girls across Anambra and Nigeria. It sends a clear signal that no office is beyond their reach and expands the horizon of leadership possibilities.
The real work, however, begins now. The office of the SSG demands discipline, coordination, and effective delivery.
Mrs Nnake must justify the confidence reposed in her and set a high standard for inclusive, performance-driven governance.
Governor Soludo deserves commendation for this bold and forward-looking decision.
In a system often resistant to change, he has chosen vision over convention.
History may well remember this not just as an appointment, but as the beginning of a new leadership pathway—one that could, in time, open the door to a female elected governor in Anambra State.
That is a legacy worth building.
