EDITORIAL: The Disquiet in UNIZIK Must Come to an End Now

EDITORIAL

By Tony Okafor

The recent appointment of Professor Benard Ifeanyi Odoh as the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University has elicited a mix of emotions.

On one hand, there is excitement and anticipation for the fresh perspective and leadership he will bring. On the other hand, some feel aggrieved, questioning the selection process and Odoh’s suitability for the role.

Odoh, a Professor of Geophysics, holds the record as the first alumnus to occupy the position of Vice Chancellor at UNIZIK.

His former position as Secretary to the State Government in Ebonyi demonstrates his capability.

His promise to work tirelessly for the university’s progress and address existing challenges head-on is reassuring.

However, the controversies surrounding his appointment must be addressed.

Some feel unjustly excluded from the Vice Chancellor selection process, while others suspect manipulation.

It is crucial that those with grievances pursue their concerns through legal channels, rather than perpetuating discord.

As Professor Odoh takes the helm, let him prioritize unity and progress over vendetta.

He must lead with fairness, transparency, and meritocracy, while stakeholders engage constructively to support his vision.

The university community should now come together, putting aside sectional feelings and clannish biases.

Anambra is not among the states known for discriminating against non-indigenes.

In fact, Anambra has consistently demonstrated inclusivity, with non-indigenes holding key positions in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration. This spirit of unity and cooperation should prevail at UNIZIK.

Professor Odoh’s appointment is a significant milestone, and he should be given the freedom to work without unnecessary distractions.

His success will depend on the support of the university community. It is essential to judge him on his performance, not hearsay or biases.

As he begins his five-year tenure, UNIZIK’s progress depends on unity and cooperation.

The disquiet in the university community should cease, and all stakeholders should work towards a brighter future for the institution.

By doing so, UNIZIK will thrive, realizing its full potential and honouring the legacy of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, while embodying its motto: ‘Discipline, Excellence, and Self-Reliance.”
