EDITORIAL: We Welcome Mefor, but Soludo Shouldn’t ‘Headmaster’ Him

EDITORIAL

By Tony Okafor

The recent appointment of Dr. Law Mefor as Anambra’s Commissioner for Information presents a golden opportunity for Governor Chukwuma Soludo to revitalize the state’s information machinery.

However, rumours of the Governor’s penchant for micromanaging his aides raise concerns.

Dr. Mefor’s impressive credentials – as a distinguished academic, public intellectual, and media consultant – position him to excel in his new role. But will he be allowed to function effectively?

The past has shown that restrictive control can hinder progress. Sir Paul Nwosu’s tenure, though uninspiring, was reportedly hamstrung by lack of autonomy. For instance, his advice against shutting down National Light, the Anambra Newspaper, was allegedly disregarded.

Governor Soludo must resist the temptation to adopt a “headmaster/pupils” relationship with his aides. Instead, he should trust Dr. Mefor’s judgment, encourage innovative ideas, and foster a collaborative environment.

By granting Dr. Mefor the freedom to operate, Governor Soludo can unlock the full potential of Anambra’s information sector.

This would enable Dr. Mefor to strengthen the communication machinery, foster a vibrant information environment, and leverage his media expertise to showcase Anambra’s development strides.

We urge Governor Soludo to adopt a more inclusive leadership style, embracing the expertise of his aides. Dr. Mefor’s success will be a testament to the Governor’s willingness to empower his team.

Anambra deserves innovative leadership. Give Dr. Law Mefor the reins, and let him propel the state forward.

It is our sincere hope that Governor Soludo will not repeat the mistakes of the past but will allow Dr. Mefor to operate freely and bring his wealth of experience to bear on the information sector.

The people of Anambra are watching with keen interest, and history will judge Governor Soludo’s leadership style.

We wish Dr. Mefor success in his new role and hope that Governor Soludo will give him the necessary support to excel
