Soludo puts the final nail on National Light Newspaper

News

Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has put the final nail on the existence of the longest existing state newspaper in the country, National Light.

The professor governor had within the year announced that the newspaper would be closed down. This was followed by several negotiations involving the leadership of Nigeria Union of e and government officials.

Though NUJ had earlier insisted on the existence of the corporation, but when it became obvious that Soludo was hell bent on shutting it down, NUJ through its state chairman, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu pressured the government to deploy journalists working in the company to other government ministries.

The closure of the paper had earned Soludo lots of criticisms, including those who said it was unheard of, for a renowned professor to have so much aversion for knowledge as can be seen in newspapering.

Meanwhile, in a defiant move on Wednesday, Soludo announced that he has finally buried National Light Newspaper. He said the action was to curb wastage, as the newspaper company was only taking from government and unable to fund itself.

He said: “Today, I signed the document repealing the Anambra State Publishing and Newspaper Printing Corporation. This is part of our efforts at reducing government spendings and cutting cost in the face of dwindling revenues.

“We shall continue to work hard to make Anambra win!”
