A recently passed-out National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Anaeto Maryann Ebere, has raised concern over online harassment after a Facebook user sent her a private message ordering her to stop posting her NYSC photos.

Maryann, who had shared her excitement about completing the mandatory one-year national service on her Facebook profile, said she was surprised when a male user stormed her inbox to criticize her posts.

According to her, the individual dismissed her NYSC discharge certificate as “just an HND certificate,” insisting she had no reason to celebrate publicly and should stop posting her achievement online. The message, which appeared unsolicited, sparked reactions from friends who described it as cyberbullying and an unnecessary attempt to belittle her accomplishment.

Speaking on the incident, Maryann said she chose to celebrate her journey because completing NYSC is a milestone every graduate looks forward to.

“I didn’t expect someone to message me and try to shut me down. I only shared my joy. NYSC is not something easy; anyone who completes it deserves to celebrate,” she said.

Social media users have condemned the act, stressing that NYSC completion—whether after a university or polytechnic education—is a national duty and should not be downplayed.
