Youths of Awka Kingdom in Anambra State have been urged to embrace education and make the best of it for a better future.
Awka Na Aso Enwe Foundation made the call during the maiden Awka quiz competition prize giving and award ceremony 2024 held at St John Of God Secondary School, Awka.
Guest speaker at the event, Prof Frank-Collins Okafor while charging secondary school students of Awka extraction who gathered for the event said that Awka was one of the earliest towns to embrace education, even before the advent of colonialism.
“You must all carry yourselves with pride, knowing that you are from Awka kingdom. Awka was one of the few places were the colonial masters arrived and found people who could speak impeccable English, and the British were very pleased with this.
“The first ever indigenous Vice Chancellor of a university was your son, Prof Kenneth Dike, the Buckingham Palace gate which is still standing today in the UK was the handiwork of Awka sons in 1926. Those are things to be proud of.
“You must take pride in who you are and be very serious with your education. The pride you should have as someone from Awka is not such that you can not bend down and learn,” Okafor admonished.
The coordinator of Awka Na Aso Enwe Foundation, Mr Chris Ofodile said the Programme and prizes were sponsored by groups and individuals from the kingdom, including Awka Elite Club, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu and member representing Awka State constituency 1, Hon Henry Mbachu.
He added that Mbachu has additionally announced N2million scholarship to cover WAEC fees for Senior and Junior secondary school student who participated in the quiz competition
