The Agulu People’s Union (APU) has urgently petitioned the Anambra State Government over the recurring accidents along the Agulu Lake road, following a tragic crash on Friday, 27th February 2026, that claimed the lives of scores of burial mourners returning from ceremonies in the area.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, Dr. Sir Emmanuel Ibeneme, President-General of APU, and Comrade Chukwudi Anazodo, National Public Relations Officer, described the incident as a “painful reminder of the fragility of human existence” and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.
The union expressed particular concern that the Agulu Lake Bridge has been a frequent site of deadly accidents, urging the state government to take immediate action.
“We urgently appeal to the Anambra State Government to mount barricades at Ama_Charlie and Ezinano axis of the road,” the statement said, adding “We cannot continue to witness the loss of lives in such a preventable manner.”
APU officials added that the organization had previously highlighted the dangers of this route as part of their civil oversight responsibilities, noting warnings sent as far back as 5th May 2025.
The union called on authorities to prioritize safety measures to prevent further tragedies along the busy corridor.
The statement concluded with prayers for the souls of the departed and comfort for their families, urging that memories of the victims serve as a reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety.
