The experiences of neighbouring states, where similar security outfits have been launched, serve as a warning.
The Ebubeagu security outfit, launched in some sister states, has been marred by allegations of human rights abuses, political vendetta, and election thuggery.
These disturbing trends underscore the imperative for Anambra State to learn from these experiences and ensure that Agunechemba does not replicate the same mistakes.
As Agunechemba begins its operations, Governor Soludo must take proactive steps to prevent potential abuses.
The state government must establish clear guidelines, robust accountability mechanisms, and comprehensive training programmes to ensure that Agunechemba personnel operate with professionalism, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
The allegations that Agunechemba personnel were hired and supplied to Anambra State by a well-known former Niger Delta militant are deeply troubling and raise concerns about external influence.
This is reminiscent of the proscribed Bakassi Boys outfit, which was allegedly imported into Anambra State from another South-East state, highlighting the risks of external manipulation.
It is essential that the Soludo administration prioritizes the recruitment of Agunechemba personnel from communities and local government areas, in line with the principles of community policing.
Community-based recruitment has been shown to have numerous benefits, including improved understanding of local dynamics, enhanced community relationships, and increased effectiveness in addressing local security challenges.
By adopting this approach, Agunechemba can foster trust and cooperation with the local population, ensuring that its operations are tailored to the unique needs and concerns of Ndi Anambra.

The recent allegations of extrajudicial killings, particularly the incident at Owerre Ezukala and the gruesome findings at an Oba hotel, are appalling and demand a comprehensive investigation.
