A tragic accident involving a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)-laden tanker occurred on Sunday at Umuike Echem community, Nnobi, near Nnokwa junction, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the death of one person.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the tanker while navigating a sharp bend, causing the vehicle to trip and hit a perimeter fence.
The impact led to the tanker’s contents spilling out, posing a significant risk of fire outbreak.
The Anambra State Fire Service responded swiftly to the scene, deploying two crews of firemen and two firefighting trucks.
Their prompt action prevented a potential inferno, and the spilled PMS was successfully transloaded into another truck.
Unfortunately, the tanker’s conductor died instantly in the accident, while the driver sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident and praised the quick response of the fire service, which averted a more significant disaster.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and advised the public to resume their normal activities, assuring that the situation was under control.
