A group, Igbo Community Association FCT has called on the senator representing Ebonyi North, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi to publicly apologize to former minister of education, Dr Mrs Oby Ezekwesili for verbally attacking her at the National Assembly.
The group, which is the apex body of all Igbos residing in Abuja said it will stage a protest against the senator if he failed to apologize.
In a press statement by its President General, Engr Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe which was made available to journalists, the group said: “It has to be embarrassing to watch the Senator in the person of Nwebonyi openly disparage a woman considered an Amazon by the wide majority of Nigerians and particularly, the Igbo speaking regions.
“It’s even more revealing that the disparagement came during the hearing of Senator Natasha Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegation.
“It indeed shows the lacking respect the Senate has towards woman and womanhood. This is knowing that the upper chamber is made up of a majority of men.
“Sen Nwebonyi should be sanctioned and called what he is, an embarrassment to the red chamber and equally an embarrassment to the Igbo men.”
“The Senator must apologize to Oby Ezekwesili and to the general Igbo nation. We Igbos in Abuja demand that he apologize publicly or face our wrath.
“Oby Ezekwesili has served Nigeria well and impressively. She does not deserve such a foul treatment”
“We are calling on the Senate to sanction the Senator. We Igbos are prepared to stage a major protest against the I’ll treatment of women by the Senate,” the group said.
