The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has assured his supporters of his readiness to contest in the 2027 elections.
He said he had it on good authority that the Federal Government does not want him to contest, insisting that he would still participate even if the elections were held in their “bedroom.”
Speaking at the Obidient Conference and official declaration for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi urged the audience to join hands with him to rescue Nigeria for future generations, who, according to him, will suffer the consequences of decades of bad governance.
The former Anambra State governor said the current administration has borrowed more than any previous government, adding that most of the loans would be repaid between 2045 and 2050, when many of those who plunged the country into debt would no longer be around.
On why he left the Labour Party, Obi said:
“Democracy must work. I left the Labour Party when I was informed that as long as I remained in the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission would not recognise its leadership, and that the Federal Government does not want me on the ballot.
” But I want to assure you that I will contest the coming election even if it holds in their bedroom. And if they do not want to transmit the results, we will transmit them for them,”Obi said.
According to him, ‘Nigeria must get it right in 2027. Election results must be transmitted online in real time and whoever fails to transmit results will be transmitted’.
Obi, who assured that his administration would invest heavily in education and healthcare, said most countries across the world achieved greatness through intentional investment in education.
He added that he would do everything possible to lift people out of poverty in order to reduce criminality.
The presidential aspirant said he would tour the entire country, including higher institutions, to see the real challenges on the ground, stressing that he wants to help fix Nigeria now that he has the strength to undertake difficult tasks.
He added that those joining him must understand that the priority is the future and wellbeing of the people.
He also promised to rid Nigeria of corruption, saying the menace would be reduced by 60 per cent once a leader and his family have nothing to do with corrupt practices.
Obi further said: “When I became governor of Anambra State, I advised my wife to forget about the Office of the First Lady because we were not elected together. I approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy for government land, but have none for myself or my family. If you find any, petition the appropriate authorities.”
Also addressing the gathering, the Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Tanko Yunusa, urged Nigerians to mobilise from every part of the country for the 2027 general elections.
He encouraged them to channel their collective energy into the ADC as the vehicle for transformation and victory in 2027.
The Akwa Ibom State coordinator of the movement, Dr. Ben Smith, urged members to remain united in pursuit of their goal, warning that divisions or factionalisation could derail the dream of a new Nigeria.
