The Independent National Electoral Commission has published the name of Chief George Moghalu as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025, Anambra State election.

This development affirms the leadership of Julius Abure as the recognised LP National Chairman.

Moghalu emerged victorious from the Abure-led faction’s primary, held on April 5 at Finotel Hotel, Awka, securing 573 votes against his rival, John Nwosu, who polled 19 votes.

The exercise, monitored by INEC officials and election observers, recorded 649 delegates, with 601 accredited, 592 valid votes, and five invalid ballots.

The Labour Party celebrated Moghalu’s emergence on its official X handle, congratulating him on his historic victory and stating, “Heartfelt congratulations to Chief Dr. George Moghalu on this historic victory! May your leadership and vision propel Anambra State to new heights.”

However, a rival LP faction conducted a parallel primary on April 10, producing Jude Umenajiego, a sitting member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, as its candidate.

Umenajiego scored 180 votes, defeating John Nwosu again, who polled 69 votes. He named Henry Mbachu as his running mate.

The LP’s National Deputy Youth Leader, Dr. Barry Johnson, confirmed Moghalu as the party’s legitimate candidate, attributing the internal rift to a power struggle between LP presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Johnson revealed that the party is divided into three camps: the Abure-led National Working Committee and National Executive Council, the Obi-led Obedient Movement and Nenadi Usman group, and the Otti camp reportedly backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress and some APC elements.

“The rift in the LP is due to a power tussle between Obi and Otti for control of the party ahead of 2027,” Johnson said, reaffirming that George Moghalu remains the party’s candidate for the Anambra governorship election.
