A rights group, the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), led by Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, has appealed to the Anambra State Government and other well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of the family of veteran journalist, Alphonsus Ejiofor Nweze, who tragically died in a road accident in Asaba, Delta State.
In a statement issued by the group’s leadership, Intersociety commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his condolence message to the bereaved family, describing it as a welcome gesture of solidarity.
The group, however, urged the Anambra government to complement its sympathy with tangible support for the late journalist’s widow and children.
According to Intersociety’s findings, the fatal accident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Abraka Junction, Asaba, when a commercial bus conveying Nweze and other passengers from the Onitsha Niger Bridgehead lost its brake and rammed into a heavy-duty vehicle.
The impact crushed the passenger side of the bus where Nweze was seated, killing him instantly and injuring the driver. He was the only fatality recorded in the crash.
The group described the incident as “deeply saddening,” noting that the late journalist had, despite the day’s heavy rainfall, gone to his Old Market Road, Onitsha office in pursuit of his daily activities.
The statement further disclosed that Alphonsus Nweze hailed from Okka, Itchi community in Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State. He was married to Mrs. Chioma Alphonsus Nweze, 47, a petty trader, and was father to four children — Oluebubechukwu, Somtochukwu, Ajuluchukwu, and Munachi. Two of his daughters are students of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, studying Human Anatomy and Law respectively.
Late Nweze was a respected journalist who began his career in Lagos in the 1990s before serving as Champion Newspapers’ correspondent in Anambra State.
“He was a prominent figure in the Anambra Human Rights Community, a coalition that courageously resisted human rights abuses and promoted democratic values from the late 1990s through the 2000s,” the rights group stated.
“Intersociety mourns a committed journalist who dedicated his career to truth, justice, and fairness,” the statement read, adding, “We appeal to the Anambra State Government to assist in giving him a befitting burial and to support his wife and children, particularly in their education and general welfare.”
The organization also called on journalists, human rights defenders, and members of the public to rally around the Nweze family in their time of grief, describing his death as “a huge loss to the Nigerian media and civil rights community.”
