A disturbing incident has been reported from Ebenebe, a community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a group of youths allegedly manhandled a co-villager suspected of stealing foodstuffs and soft drinks from a village shop.
The suspect, identified as Chukwujekwu, was reportedly apprehended by the villagers and subjected to physical assault, including flogging and beating, while being forced to confess to the crime.
A video trending on social media shows the suspect with his hands tied behind his back, surrounded by villagers who are seen interrogating him.
The video also displays the alleged stolen items, including packets of Indomie noodles, Coke drinks, and other foodstuffs. During the interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, revealing that he had collected the key to the shop from his wife.
However, it remains unclear whether the suspect was eventually handed over to the police or lynched.
The incident has raised concerns about vigilantism and the rule of law in the community, highlighting the need for authorities to intervene and ensure that justice is served through due process.
