In a heartwarming display of statesmanship and historical perspective, Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, has taken a significant step towards righting a long-standing wrong.
By promising to honour the legacy late Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, the pioneer architect behind the establishment of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Soludo has demonstrated a deep understanding of the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of pioneers who have shaped the trajectory of the state.
Dr. Mbadinuju’s tenure as the first civilian governor of Anambra State immediately after the military era was marked by formidable challenges.
As a first-timer in the hot seat, he faced numerous obstacles, including the remnants of the military machinery that had long dictated the pace of governance in the state.
These entrenched interests and power structures threatened to derail any attempt at genuine leadership.
Yet, despite these challenges, Mbadinuju demonstrated remarkable courage and foresight in establishing Anambra State’s first university, a commitment to the development of the state and its people.
One notable aspect of Mbadinuju’s governance that deserves recognition is the “milk of human kindness” he injected into governance and the autonomy he allowed to local governments.
This bold decision ensured that funds were disbursed and utilized without interference from the state government, demonstrating Mbadinuju’s dedication to good governance.
While his administration was enmeshed in controversy, including the closure of primary and secondary schools for nearly a year, it is essential to acknowledge the complexities of governance and the difficult decisions that come with it, especially as a first-timer.
Governor Soludo’s promise to honour Mbadinuju’s legacy is a step in the right direction.
By acknowledging the significant contributions of his predecessor, Soludo is promoting a culture of appreciation and recognition for the efforts of past leaders.
This gesture serves as a catalyst for a broader re-evaluation of Mbadinuju’s contributions to Anambra State and ensures that his legacy will be celebrated for generations to come.
Indeed, “The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain.”
