The Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State has come forward to clarify the recent deployment of soldiers in the area, contradicting allegations made by the community’s youth president, Chibuike Okwaji.
According to a prominent Nimo Security Coordinator, the soldiers were invited by the royal cabinet to ensure the security and safety of the people, following a recent invasion of the area by unknown gunmen.
The coordinator, speaking at the Owelle Ike Oliobi palace, explained that the community had previously reported the incidents to the police and DSS, but no action was taken.
He emphasized that the traditional ruler, Igwe Maxi Ike Oliobi, did not invite the soldiers to intimidate the citizens, as alleged by Okwaji.
The security coordinator revealed that three prominent indigenes of the community had been attacked at Oye Nimo, and the unknown gunmen, now living in Owa Nimo, had demanded names of prominent Nimo people for kill or kidnap.
He stated that before the introduction of the soldiers, kidnapping and other criminal activities were rampant in the community.
The coordinator also noted that on the day the soldiers met with the youth at the Nimo Town Development Union Secretariat, none of the youths were harmed nor molested.
He highlighted that the community spends millions of naira to sustain security and peace, which has been disrupted by the invasion of unknown gunmen who have co-opted some Nimo youth to occupy Owa and cause mayhem.
The genesis of the saga, according to the coordinator, lies in the opposition to the Owa project, which some youth were convinced to resist.
The Nimo community has called for calm and urged the authorities to take action against those responsible for the insecurity.
The security coordinator warned that Okwaji should be held accountable for spreading false information and inciting violence against the the royal palace.
