Preparations for the 2025 Ofala Festival of Onitsha are in full gear, with traditional ceremonies now underway ahead of the grand celebration slated for October 17 and 18.
This year’s festival, themed “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), underscores the values of togetherness and resilience which have defined the Onitsha kingdom for generations.
According to a statement from the Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, the pre-Ofala ceremonies—an integral part of the revered Onitsha cultural calendar—are already ongoing.
Among the traditional rites are the Owuwaji (Yam Festival), which marks the season of thanksgiving and renewal; Inye Ukwu na Nlo Eze Onicha, the monarch’s annual period of spiritual retreat; and Ogbalido, the sacred Feast of Atonement that precedes the monarch’s public emergence.
The highlight of the celebration will be the two main events—the Iru Ofala on October 17 and the Azu Ofala on October 18.
While Iru Ofala is reserved for the monarch and his chiefs, featuring rituals of majesty and splendor, Azu Ofala is traditionally a people’s day, with age grades and cultural troupes performing in colorful displays to pay homage to the Obi of Onitsha.
“We are excited to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Onitsha through the Ofala Festival,” said Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the festival’s Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee. “This year’s theme, Njiko na Ntachi, emphasizes the importance of unity and perseverance in our community.”
Maduegbuna described the Ofala Festival as “a celebration of our history, our traditions, and our people,” adding that residents and visitors alike are welcome to join in experiencing the vibrant culture and pageantry of Onitsha.
The Ofala Festival, recognized globally as a UNESCO-supported cultural event, remains a rallying point for Onitsha sons and daughters at home and abroad, as well as for lovers of Igbo culture.
