Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has elected Mr. Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu from Imo State as its new President General.

The election took place during the Ime-Obi meeting held in Enugu on Saturday.

This development follows the demise of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, after a brief illness.

Dr. Alex Ogbonna, Ohanaeze’s spokesman, disclosed this information in a statement.

According to the statement, the Imeobi/General Assembly meeting aimed to review events since Iwuanyanwu’s passing.

Notable Igbo leaders attended, and the meeting noted the chain of catastrophes that have affected Ohanaeze in recent years.

The Imeobi resolved to allow Imo State to complete its remaining 27 days in office, as its tenure expires on January 10, 2025.

The next President-General will be elected based on Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s constitutional provisions.

Some respondents have expressed opposition to this development, alleging that the APC has hijacked Ohanaeze leadership.

However, others have countered this claim, emphasizing the importance of respecting Ohanaeze’s constitution.

The election of the next President-General, who will come from Rivers State, is expected to take place on January 10, 2025.
