The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has commenced a comprehensive tour of police formations across the state, in a renewed effort to strengthen security operations and reinforce community policing.

The statewide inspection began on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, with a surprise visit to the Rapid Response Squad formation before proceeding to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron 54 and the Area Command in Onitsha.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the CP’s visits are aimed at evaluating operational effectiveness, identifying security gaps, and reinforcing professionalism within the ranks.

During his interaction with officers, CP Orutugu reiterated the importance of integrity, discipline, and strict adherence to operational protocols.

He charged police personnel to uphold the highest standards of conduct, particularly in dealing with the public and managing internal affairs.

The Commissioner expressed grief over the recent tragic incident in Awka, where a police inspector was accidentally shot and killed by his own son.

According to police accounts, the son, unaware of the condition of the AK-47 rifle assigned to his father, accidentally discharged the weapon, resulting in the inspector’s death.

The officer’s second son, who also sustained injuries in the incident, is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, CP Orutugu stressed the need for officers to secure and responsibly manage police equipment, especially firearms, even within their homes.

The police chief also used the visit to address broader welfare issues, urging officers to shun corruption, extortion, and negligence of family responsibilities—factors he said could adversely affect morale and performance.

Accompanying the Commissioner on the tour were Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Administration and Criminal Investigations, along with other senior officers of the command.

CP Orutugu’s tour is expected to cover all police formations across the state, including remote outposts, as part of efforts to boost confidence in law enforcement and ensure a safer Anambra.
