Paul Chukwuma Hails Onitsha Ofala Festival, Calls for Igbo Cultural Renaissance

As His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, mni, Agbogidi, the Obi of Onitsha, prepares to celebrate the 2024 Ofala Festival on October 18–19, Sir Paul Chukwuma, the frontline APC governorship aspirant, has expressed deep admiration for the historic occasion and called for a revival of Igbo cultural heritage.

In a statement released by Mr James Eze, the spokesperson of his campaign council, Chukwuma praised the Ofala Festival as a crucial event that reconnects the Obi with the people of Onitsha, reinforcing unity and cultural pride among the Igbo people. Eze conveyed Chukwuma’s firm belief that such cultural celebrations are vital to rekindling communal bonds and inspiring future generations.

“The Ofala Festival exemplifies the beauty and depth of our Igbo heritage,” Chukwuma said. “As we honour His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, in this celebration, we recognise the need for a cultural renaissance that will instil pride in our people and strengthen the values that define us.”

Chukwuma acknowledged the Obi’s role as a guardian of Igbo customs and traditions, emphasising the festival’s significance in preserving the region’s unique cultural identity. Eze noted that Chukwuma is committed to supporting cultural preservation and believes that traditional events like Ofala are invaluable for educating the younger generation on the importance of heritage.

“Under Agbogidi’s respected leadership, the Ofala Festival has become a renowned platform to showcase the richness of Igbo culture,” Chukwuma noted. “His Majesty’s dedication to cultural preservation is an inspiration to all who hold dear the legacy of our ancestors.”

Sir Chukwuma also highlighted his vision for Anambra State, emphasising the need to invest in the arts, language, and traditional practices. He pledged that, if elected governor, his administration would create programs that safeguard cultural traditions and foster a renewed sense of identity among the Igbo people.

The annual Ofala Festival, which takes place at Ime Obi, Onitsha, is expected to draw dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the Onitsha community in a vibrant celebration. Chukwuma’s message honours the festival and resonates as a broader call for Igbo unity and cultural pride amidst a changing world.
